In this interview, GREED CULTURE discusses their frustration with societal greed and the relentless energy behind their music.
1. Congratulations on the release of your debut single
"Take It Back" and the upcoming EP 'The Death of Us.' Can you tell us
what inspired the creation of this EP and the message behind it?
Thanks so much! The inspiration for most things in this band (the name, lyrics,
musical style, etc.) come from a frustration in societal shortcomings.
Especially with issues rooted in greed. The list is very long and it’s just so
incredibly frustrating to know that so many problems could be fixed if greed
wasn’t an issue.
2. You've described your music as "full throttle." Can you elaborate
on your creative process when writing songs that aim to blow off steam in a
short amount of time?
We like to haul ass, but we also like slow and heavy. We’re just trying to make
songs that feel “relentless” or that they just don’t take the foot off the gas
pedal at all. Some heavy bands have some slower or more mellow parts. We just
want the intensity to stay cranking the whole time.
3. How did the four of you come together to form GREED CULTURE, and what made
you decide to pursue hardcore music as a band?
Martin has known each of the other guys for years and years. When the demos
were starting to come together and it was time to put together the band the
rest of the guys were easy picks because they rip and they’re great humans.
4. "Take It Back" is a powerful track with intense lyrics and
screams. Can you share the inspiration behind the song and its significance
within the EP?
Like the rest of the songs on the EP, Take It Back is a song about being pissed
at the things we are doing wrong as a society and pointing out that we can do
better.
Working with Beau is fantastic. Martin and David D. Have recorded with Beau in the past with other bands. When we were ready to track these songs, it was a no-brainer to work with Beau. He just really knows what he’s doing and makes the whole process so easy and fun. His input is almost sneaky because he makes it so seamless and easy. You’re just there working on it and BAM! It sounds amazing. Love that guy.
6. Could you take us through the tracklist of 'The Death of Us' and highlight any specific themes or stories behind the songs?
Start to finish it hauls ass and talks about how we need to do better as a society and not let greed get the best of us.
7. The name GREED CULTURE suggests a strong message about societal issues rooted in greed. How does this theme translate into your music, and what do you hope listeners take away from it?
The name definitely sparks thought and consideration to the idea of greed. If we can get anyone to take the time to think about how greed is affecting the choices they make and can maybe even get someone to make better choices because of it, then we are stoked.
8. In your opinion, how does the Southern California hardcore scene influence your music and the energy you bring to your live shows?
We are all old, so we’ve seen our fair share of different facets of the Southern California Hardcore scene and I’m not sure if it has much influence on these songs other than we love hardcore in general and we just wanted to make songs that were fast and pissed.
9. With your EP set to release on September 8, 2023, what are your expectations
and hopes for how your fans and the music community will receive it?
We’re just happy to get the songs out there. No matter what the band is, some
people will dig it and others won’t. That’s the beauty of music. Something for
everyone.
10. Can you share any memorable experiences or challenges you faced during the
recording process of 'The Death of Us'?
No real challenges. Like mentioned earlier, Beau makes the whole process really
easy and fun. He’s fast, organized, and just dials things in as we’re going
along.
11. Your music video for "Take It Back" is visually captivating. What
was the concept behind the video, and how did it complement the song's message?
We had limited time and budget to shoot a video. Thankfully our friend Jim
Madden happened to be in town from Canada and agreed to come shoot a video for
us. We thought the low light / back lit vibe might work and Jim ended up making
it all look awesome. Thanks Jim!
12. Hardcore music often connects deeply with its audience. How would you
describe the emotional and visceral experience of attending a GREED CULTURE
live show?
We hope that people can relate to the lyrics and the message and come scream
out their frustrations with us. Oh, and circle pits!
13. What do you believe sets GREED CULTURE apart from other bands in the
hardcore genre, and what do you hope to achieve with your unique style?
We’re not really aiming to set our selves apart. The songs are very straight
forward. We’re not reinventing the wheel or anything. We love the style and are
happy to just be a part of it.
14. Beyond the EP release, do you have any plans for touring or other exciting
projects on the horizon?
We just want to play shows with our friends and finish up writing and recording
another EP in 2024.
15. Are there any artists or bands that have had a significant influence on
your music and your journey as a band?
Not anything in particular. We all like different hardcore bands. We all listen
to and play other styles of music as well. So it’s a real mixed bag.
16. Lastly, what message would you like to send to your fans and listeners as
they eagerly anticipate the release of 'The Death of Us' and future GREED
CULTURE endeavors?
Be kind to people, and think twice about where and with who you spend your
money. As individuals, it’s one of the only real areas where we have much
influence. In a capitalistic society, money talks. So use your money wisely and
don’t give it to assholes.
