Explore 22HERTZ's evolution from Toronto's music scene to industrial rock, carving a unique identity post-Point Blank. Ralf Muller shares challenges of balancing roles and the band's growth, themes in "Adrenochrome," and collaboration impact. Visuals, capitalism's impact, and future plans revealed.
1. How
did the band's formation in the heart of Toronto's music scene influence
22HERTZ's unique sound and style within the industrial rock genre?
It didn't,
the biggest influence in starting the 22 HERTZ project was a live nine inch
nail show I saw in 2010. It showed me you can make real heavy music without it
being heavy metal.
2.
Coming from the legacy of the heavy metal band 'Point Blank,' how has 22HERTZ
evolved and carved its own identity in the transition to industrial rock?
It was
tough in the beginning, but you know what they say, put yourself in an
uncomfortable place, and new things will come out.
3. Ralf
Muller, as the lead vocalist, songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist,
how do you balance these roles to maintain a cohesive creative vision for the
band?
It's tough, but somebody's got to do it.
4. "Detonate"
was a striking debut for 22HERTZ. In what ways has the band grown and expanded
its sonic horizons since the release of the first album?
The first
album Detonate was more about imitating bands I liked. And the second album,
Adrenochrome, is more what I like.
5. Can
you share the inspiration behind the name "22 HERTZ" and how it
reflects the band's musical philosophy or approach?
The concept
of the name 22 HERTZ is "the edge of perception"
6. "Adrenochrome"
is your second album. What themes or messages were you looking to convey
through this project, and how does it represent the band's evolution?
It does
have a theme of personal struggles, but also struggles in the music world and
also the state of the world.
7. The
lineup features top session musicians from Toronto. How does collaboration with
these talented individuals contribute to the band's energy and overall
musicality?
Raw energy
and power.
8. The
album is accompanied by three music videos. How do visuals play a role in
enhancing the storytelling of 22HERTZ's music, and what stories do these videos
aim to tell?
The stories
the videos aimed to tell is up to the viewer.
9. How
do you navigate the balance between staying true to your artistic vision, as
expressed in the slogan "Making songs the radio won't play," and
reaching a broader audience?
I gave up
on that long ago, capitalism has destroyed the music industry.
10. Looking
ahead, what can fans expect from 22HERTZ in terms of live performances, future
projects, or any exciting developments on the horizon?
