The Total Sound Of The Undergound

Lelahel Metal

In this interview, DECOY discusses their formation, musical influences, and the impact of the Louisiana metal scene on their sound. They share insights into their intense performances, songwriting process, and future plans.

1. DECOY emerged on the scene in 2017. Can you tell us about the band's formation and the initial vision you had for your music?
We’ve all been friends for years and we have all been apart of different projects together. It kindof just made sense to finally all get together and create Decoy
2. Your sound is deeply rooted in the Louisiana metal/hardcore scene. How has the local music scene influenced your style and approach?
I think the local music scene has had a bigger effect on our mentality and approach more than it has sonically. But shout out to Crowbar, Brat, Christworm, Golgothan, and Swampgrave just to name a few!! It warms my heart to see Louisiana getting some more shine as of late.
3. Your music features ferocious vocals, aggressively dissonant guitars, and a pummeling low end. How do you achieve and maintain this intense sound?
We try to just channel whatever we’re going through at that time and make some intense music for people to have fun to!
4. You draw inspiration from bands like Hatebreed, Converge, Vein, and All Shall Perish. What elements of these bands' music do you incorporate into your own?
All of those bands are angry, intense, and chaotic in their own way so we try to produce a culmination of that mixed with influences from plenty other great hardcore and metal bands that laid the foundation before us.
5. Since your inception, how has DECOY evolved musically and as a band?
Personally I think we have stayed in our same lane but we are becoming more well rounded and polished every time we write something new and hopefully everyone else feels the same.

6. Can you describe your songwriting process? How do you balance individual creativity with the band’s collective vision?
I think as a collective we have the same vision in mind and we’ve all been working together for so long even beyond this project so things just naturally fall in place whenever we start jamming.
7. What themes and messages do you aim to convey through your lyrics and music?
We focus alot on mental health topics. Beautifully dark through positive aggression
8. You’ve been described as a “powder-keg of undetonated explosives.” What do you think sets DECOY apart from other bands in the genre?
A lot of bands these days have some sort of gimmick and that’s not really what we’re about. We try to stay as authentic as possible and use real life experiences to fuel our music.
9. What are some of the biggest challenges you've faced as an up-and-coming band, and how have you overcome them?
I can’t speak for everyone but I (Jonah) left the band in 2019 to focus on my personal life and rejoined in 2023 so trying to get acclimated again with band stuff while balancing out family life. Im sure COVID times slowed everything down for the rest of the guys. Overall we’re barely getting started in comparison to what a lot of other bands are doing and having to overcome tho. Im sure bigger challenges and obstacles will get in our way at some point.

10. How do you prepare for your live performances to ensure they are as explosive and engaging as possible?
Practice haha practice really makes perfect. In terms of day of, we don’t really do too much. We’re all great friends so we just try to make sure the vibes are high and that we’re having fun

11. Can you share a particularly memorable moment or experience from your journey so far, whether on stage or in the studio?
Every show, every practice, every studio experience, etc. is special. We haven’t done anything too crazy but it always feels good to release some new music, play a new city, and make new friends doing this.
12. Looking ahead, what are DECOY’s plans for the future? Are there any upcoming tours, releases, or projects that fans should be excited about?
We have a few local and out of state shows coming up. We're playing in Texas again for the first time since 2019. Shout out to Texas, they show a lot of love to us. We also have new videos, and new music coming before the year is up forsure!!
Stay tuned
