Delve into the melancholic abyss of 'Existential Mourning' with Shivered. Explore grief, haunting melodies, and the struggle of inner demons in this introspective journey.
1. Congratulations
on the release of "Existential Mourning"! Can you share the
inspiration and themes behind this album?
Thank you!
This record has more of a grief stricken and psychological complications feel
to it. Kind of like how it feels after losing someone close.
2.
”Existential Mourning" features a mix of slow haunting riffs and
atmospheric keyboards. How did you approach the songwriting and production
process to achieve this sound?
I wanted to
challenge myself on how far I can go production wise on this record without
over-producing it, it didn’t went smooth but I got it to somewhere to the point
I was happy with.
3. As a
Gothic Doom Metal band from Iran, how has your cultural background influenced
your music and lyrical themes?
Not really,
I mean I might’ve got inspired by something that happened in my country but I
never tried to bring anything from Persian culture to my music intentionally.
4.
You’ve cited bands like Katatonia, Paradise Lost, and Swallow the Sun as
influences. How have these bands shaped your music, and are there any other
artists or genres that inspire you?
I grew up
with those bands and right after I got into Rock and Metal music I
became a huge fan of Doom metal and Gothic Metal, there are tons of other
artists and band that inspired me like Radiohead, Type O Negative , Alice in
Chains, Steven Wilson etc
5. You
took a hiatus before returning with "Existential Mourning". What
challenges did you face during this period, and what motivated you to come
back?
Financial
challenges, and I had finished 3 records during the hiatus but none of them got
released because back then I had to hire session musicians to play bass and
drums plus an audio engineer to mix and master the albums which I had no money
for, this time I decided to play Bass and drums myself ( not real drums,
programming drums or midi drums ) and mix and master it myself and it was
difficult but it was worth it! I’m happy I managed to do it.
6.
”Existential Mourning" is described as your most melancholic yet heavy
album. How did you balance these contrasting elements in your music?
During the
period of making this record I was lonely and barely got out of the house, I
was mentally not in a good shape so that’s why “ Existential Mourning “ turned
out to be darker and more melancholic album compared to previous one.
7. With
you handling all the instruments and vocals for this album, what were some of
the biggest challenges and rewards of this solo effort?
I saved a
lot of money lol and I learned how to play bass besides guitar, it might seem
an easy instrument to learn but no it’s a different beast.
8. The
track titles on "Existential Mourning" like "Paranoiac" and
"Nihilistic Serenade" suggest a deep and introspective journey. Can
you delve into the stories or concepts behind some of these tracks?
“
Existential Mourning “ title track is about coming to terms with grief, sorrow
and trauma, accepting the pain as part of life and “ Paranoiac “ is about
fighting inner demons, like mental disorders and panic attacks. And “
Nihilistic Serenade ” is basically about life has no meaning. It’s about
nihilism.
9. What
role do you see Shivered playing in the global Gothic Doom Metal scene,
especially as a band from a country not widely known for this genre?
I want to
keep Gothic and Doom Metal relevant by bringing my take on it, especially
gothic metal since I think it has become less popular these days.
10.
Looking ahead, what are your plans for Shivered in terms of live performances,
future releases, and continuing your musical evolution?
In terms of
doing live shows I cannot do that as long as I’m in Iran and Metal music is
pretty much banned and prohibited here but about future releases I don’t want
to repeat myself so hopefully the next releases will be different than previous
ones.
