ThunderSisters dive into Viking history with their powerful track "Saga of Love and Steel." We discuss love, battle, and the band's unique approach to Viking metal.
1. Congrats
on the release of "Saga of Love and Steel"! Can you tell us about the
inspiration behind this song and how it ties into the Viking themes the band is
known for?
-Dy Moob:
Thank you very much for taking the time to listen to our work. The inspiration
came to me while I was watching the series Vikings: Valhalla. I love shows with
Viking themes, and since the band already shares that theme, I decided to write
something about love. Love is not always the first thing that comes to mind
when we talk about Viking battles and historical conquests, but it has always
been a part of their story!
2. Dy
Moob, as the main writer of the song, what was your creative process like when
composing this track? How did you approach combining love, battle, and Viking
lore into a cohesive story?
-Dy Moob: I
started by sitting down with my bass, humming the melody without any lyrics,
and playing some bass notes, though it didn't have much structure yet. The next
day, I created a simple MIDI guide using a piano sound, a basic bass line, and
a vocal sample, which I then shared with the producer Kebras and the vocalist
Pri Thunder. They both loved it, and Kebras immediately began composing the
orchestral parts, which were largely his responsibility. I collaborated with
the rest of the band on arrangement ideas, and then we moved on to recording
and mixing, where we added elements inspired by each of the girls in the band.
The final mix, combining all our creativity, resulted in a mixing session with
nearly 100 tracks and a very exciting song.
3. Kebras’
guitar work really stands out in this track. How did the collaboration with him
come about, and what was it like working together to bring "Saga of Love
and Steel" to life?
-Dy Moob:
Kebras isn't just a great producer—he's also my fiancé, and I've known him for
over five years, not only as a producer but also as the lead guitarist for my
other band, Master Dy, where he does an outstanding job. The vocalist Pri
Thunder and I decided to invite him to collaborate on this song as both
guitarist and producer, especially since he's set to mix the entire album.
4. Pri
Thunder’s vocals are powerful and full of emotion. How did you channel the
intensity of both the love and battle elements in the song during your performance?
-Pri
Thunder: The vocals were quite challenging, but the emotion really came through
because we could imagine how love stories might have played out during a time
of conquests and fierce battles. It made us think about what the brave Norse
warriors might have felt in their hearts back then. Dy, who recorded the
backing vocals for the chorus, were fully immersed in the recording. In one
section, where Isa Nielsen also added her voice, we could really feel the
energy of the song. We were all deeply connected to the process
5. ThunderSisters
was formed in 2023, yet you’ve already built up a strong following. What do you
think has been key to the band’s rapid success in the Viking metal scene?
-Dy Moob: I
had been thinking about the band since 2016, but it was on the back burner
because my focus was on getting the Master Dy project off the ground first.
Once Master Dy started to gain traction, I finally felt it was time to bring
ThunderSisters to life. I began composing in 2023, balancing it with work on
the other band, and started to better understand the audience I wanted to
connect with. I developed the band's image and sound with a focus on building a
strong connection with that audience, whether they’re fans of Viking culture,
descendants of Nordic countries, metalheads, or not. When the first song was
released, I felt like I had hit the mark because people started connecting with
it from all over, and that makes me incredibly grateful for all the effort that
went into this project!
6. Your
debut album "Valkyries' Call" is set to release in 2025. How does
"Saga of Love and Steel" fit into the overall theme of the album? Can
you give us a hint of what fans can expect from the full record?
-Dy Moob
and Pri Thunder: We're carefully crafting the sequence of songs to keep
listeners fully immersed from start to finish. We've added instrumental nuances
and subtle transitions between tracks to create a seamless flow, without making
the songs feel repetitive. Fans can expect an album packed with energy, but
also full of deep emotion. And rest assured, we're staying true to the Viking
theme throughout—this epic vibe will carry on until the very end!
7. With
members from different parts of the world, like Denmark and São Paulo, how do
you all come together to create such a unified sound? What does the
international dynamic bring to your music?
-Pri
Thunder: The band is based in Portugal, where Dy Moob lives and holds
nationality. Isa Nielsen, though originally from Denmark, is currently living
in São Paulo. Right now, all four of us are gathered here in São Paulo to kick
off our South American tour in collaboration with Master Dy. But fans in Europe
and North America won’t have to wait long—we're already working on scheduling
shows in those regions, so exciting news is on the way!
8. The
Viking metal genre has deep roots in storytelling and mythology. How do you
balance staying true to those traditions while also adding your unique sound
and modern influences?
-Dy Moob:
First and foremost, we stay informed through constant research and study. While
I have Irish ancestry and Isa Nielsen was born in Denmark, we all make an
effort to learn as much as possible to ensure maximum authenticity. We design
our outfits and face paint to be true to the Viking era, and in our music, we
channel the same intensity as if we were fighting an ancient battle. Our
instruments are our weapons, and we want the audience to feel that power with
every verse, both in the studio and on stage. You can expect a performance
filled with raw emotion and dedication—we’ll be in a full-on trance.
9. Can
you tell us a bit more about the band’s name, ThunderSisters? What’s the
significance behind it, and how does it reflect your identity as an all-female
Viking metal band
-Dy Moob:
In 2016, I was watching a movie set in ancient times and heard this expression.
It immediately struck me—I thought, 'This would be the perfect name for a
female metal band with a Viking theme!' That idea stuck with me ever since.
Pri Thunder: When Dy invited me to join the project, the moment she told me the
name and explained the concept, it all just clicked. We've been friends for
over ten years, so we were both instantly on the same page about moving forward
with it. I’m thrilled to have been part of this journey from the start.
10. Lastly,
what message or experience do you hope listeners take away when they hear
"Saga of Love and Steel"? And what’s next for ThunderSisters as you
continue preparing for the album release?
-Pri
Thunder: We're working hard to not only share a meaningful message about Viking
culture but to also create a fun, energetic, and immersive experience for our
audience. This isn’t just about the music business for us—we genuinely love
what we do, and we have a blast doing it. Our goal is to pull the audience into
that energy from start to finish, whether it’s through this song or the ones to
come on the album. We invite everyone to join us on this journey, to follow
along and help us write the next chapters of our story together.
