The Total Sound Of The Undergound

Lelahel Metal

Asleep At The Helm dives into themes of growth, rebirth, and chaos with their latest single "Tarnished." We discuss the band's evolution, bold visuals, and their journey redefining metalcore.

1. The song addresses heavy themes like broken relationships, ignorance, and narcissism. Why was it important for the band to explore these issues now, and how does it reflect your journey as musicians and individuals?

It was important because it became a coping mechanism while writing due to the shift in dynamic the band was going through at the time. It was a reflection of the journey we took to get through one of the hardest times we’ve had as a band.

2. In the video for "Tarnished," there’s a very dark, blood-soaked aesthetic. What was the concept behind the video, and how did director Kieran Gallop help bring your vision to life?

Shooting the video in a whitewash room really brought the artist view of rebirth to life. This was a true expression of the violent nature we were exposed to at the time.

3. You mentioned that "Tarnished" represents a “new era” for Asleep At The Helm. Can you elaborate on how this track redefines the band's direction or reflects a shift in your musical or lyrical approach?

We really wanted to express where we’re at as a solid unit now. This is a true reflection of the current member and what we are inspired by as songwriters.

4. The blend of melodic elements and intense metalcore in "Tarnished" is striking. How did you work to balance these contrasting styles, and what do you think each element brings to the overall sound?

Aggression. Plenty of it. We wanted something we could really cause chaos with whilst maintaining that traditional melodic clean chorus.

5. Jimmy, you recently collaborated with After Smoke Clears on their track “Serenity.” How did that experience influence your approach to creating "Tarnished" or working within Asleep At The Helm?

Tarnished had already been uploaded ready to drop by the time they approached was there was no influence

6. The themes in "Tarnished" suggest a journey of growth and rebirth. What are some of the biggest challenges or adversities that the band has overcome, and how has this process shaped who you are today?

Undergoing a recent lineup change gave us the freedom to really experiment with a new sound. This was one of the most naturally occurring processes the band has experienced to date.

7. You’re launching a single release tour in the North of England, with support from This Dying Hour. What can fans expect from these shows, and how does it feel to bring "Tarnished" to live audiences?

The release tour has been and gone since receiving the questions

8. After your recent tour with Parting With Origin, how has your relationship with fans evolved? Are there any memorable moments from the road that stand out to you?

Visiting new cities was an overall great experience. The underground scene is all about meeting new people - this was a perfect example of that.

9. The tech-metalcore genre is constantly evolving. What do you think makes Asleep At The Helm stand out in this genre, and how do you aim to push boundaries within it?

More wee woos and more wchwchwchwchwch.

10. As musicians, what bands or artists have influenced your sound recently, and how do you each bring your own unique influences into the band’s creative process?

Dealer, Sleep Token, Alpha Wolf, Northlane, Diamond Construct.
