The Total Sound Of The Undergound

Lelahel Metal

BAXAXAXA delves into their anthology Spells From The Crypt..., reflecting on their journey, revisiting rare tracks, and sharing insights into the creative and collaborative process behind this evocative black metal release.

1. "Spells From The Crypt..." serves as an anthology of BAXAXAXA’s early material. What inspired you to bring these early recordings together in one collection, and how does it feel to revisit these songs from your early days?

This is not necessarily early material. The 2nd demo and the 7'' EP are from the years 2019 and 2020. The idea was that we simply wanted to summarize the material that was released outside of our albums. So, we don't have any special feelings. Especially because we also play the material live.

2. The album features material from different eras of BAXAXAXA’s journey, including your 1992 demo, Hellfire, and more recent releases like The Old Evil and Devoted to HIM. How do you feel the band’s sound and vision have evolved over the years?

We don't think our style has changed. The production has become more mature. But that's actually all.

3. Could you tell us about the unique elements of the limited-edition obsidian marbled vinyl release? How did you come up with the idea for the silkscreen altarpiece outer cover and the extended artwork?

To be honest, it was the label that did the creative work and presented us with the proposal. We just gave it the nod because we thought it was very good.

4. Rotting Reign handled the artwork for this release. How did you collaborate with them to bring the visual side of "Spells From The Crypt..." to life, and what makes their style a good fit for BAXAXAXA’s aesthetic?

Here, too, I have to say that the label organized the cooperation. We looked at the proposals and found that the artist captured our idea very well and put his own stamp on it. So, we also gave it the nod and are very happy with it.

5. With "Spells From The Crypt..." premiering at Necesse Mori III Fest, what was it like to introduce this anthology to fans at a live event? Did the setting in Catalonia add to the atmosphere you wanted to convey with this release?

I'm sorry, but that was also a concept of the label. We weren't there, nor did we play that night.

6. The tracks on this anthology cover a broad timeline in the band’s history. How do these recordings reflect the musical landscape and influences that inspired BAXAXAXA back in 1991 compared to today?

I don't have an answer to that. The music stands for itself. From our point of view, it hasn't changed much. Our influences are the same today as they were in 1991.

7. Condemptor revived BAXAXAXA as a full-time band in 2017. How has this transition from a side-project to a full-time commitment impacted the band’s sound, creativity, and goals?

There were no changes. The only difference is that we rehearse and play live more often. That was never originally planned. Nothing has changed in terms of creativity. Today we write the songs we want to write. Even if there are more of them now.

8. What was it like working with Krucyator Productions on the vinyl mastering, and how did their expertise help in capturing the raw essence of BAXAXAXA’s music on this special release?

Once again: Everything was organized and carried out by Down with the most high. We are very happy with how it turned out.

9. This anthology includes rare recordings, such as Rehearsal 10-03-92, exclusive to the vinyl edition. What made you decide to include this session, and what do you think fans will appreciate about hearing it?

Well, these two tracks really are something special. They only circulated in the tape trader scene. We wanted to offer the people who buy the record something special that isn't available everywhere. Whether the fans appreciate that, I don't know. But we hope so.

10. You have a range of exclusive merchandise accompanying this release, from a hoodie to a ritual flag banner. How does this merchandise connect with the themes of the album, and what kind of response have you seen from fans?

The merchandise consists of artwork from the compilation. We really like these motifs and we think that the fans would also like to have the artwork as a shirt, flag etc. At least those who do should have the opportunity to buy something. The label probably saw it that way too. So far we've had really good reactions and hope that fans and label are satisfied.

11. Since BAXAXAXA’s inception, the blac
k metal genre has grown and changed dramatically. How do you feel about the current state of black metal, and where do you see BAXAXAXA fitting within today’s scene?

To be honest, we don't care what the black metal scene is like. It's bigger than it was 30 years ago and more commercial in parts. But that doesn't interest us. We do our thing.

12. Finally, with "Spells From The Crypt..." now out, what’s next for BAXAXAXA? Are there plans for new material, tours, or other projects that fans can look forward to?

We are writing material for a new album and already have enough songs for it. But we want to take more time this time. Apart from that, you'll be able to see us live more often next year than was the case this year. For example, we will be playing a tour with Imprecation. Apart from that, there are no other projects. Two of us are playing with Naked Whipper. They have a new album coming out on Iron Bonehead next year. But Naked Whipper is an independent band and has nothing in common with Baxaxaxa apart from two members.
