Lurking Terror channels the raw essence of late ‘80s death metal with their EP A World in Darkness. We dive into their creative process, legacy, and future plans for brutal domination.
1.
Congratulations on the release of your EP A World in Darkness! Can
you tell us about the creative process behind this album and how it reflects
your vision of death metal?
- Thank
you. We follow the old ways and structures of the second wave of Death Metal.
Late 80's to be exact. We like the rawness of the down tuned guitars, blasting
drums and guttural vocals of those days. We believe we've brought that
sound back. In a time when many bands these days sound a lot alike. The
band members have strong ties to that era of music creativity. Heavy, raw and
brutally straight forward.
2. Your
band members come with a rich history, including ties to the legendary Sadistic
Intent. How has that legacy influenced the sound and direction of Lurking
Terror?
- We give
Sadistic Intent credit. We were a great piece in time forming that band's
structure. Lurking Terror's sound escapes from just being another band that
sounds like them. Maybe some people will hear some influences. Sadistic Intent
is great band. I can speak for the band that we are all fans of the Cortez
brothers writing skills. But our sound has developed into our own.
3. The
EP title A World in Darkness evokes powerful imagery. What
themes or messages are you exploring through the music and lyrics?
- The title
summons up what the lyrical content on our debut is about. We felt the title
explains everything from Darkness and nightmares to world events that have
happened or we believe will happen. And the way we see it through our
eyes.
4.
Lurking Terror’s sound is described as a blend of the old-school Stockholm
sound and the raw aggression of bands like Napalm Death. How do you balance
paying homage to classic death metal while bringing something fresh to the
genre?
- We grew
up in the era when bands of the like were being established. We started playing
at the same time as that sound was spreading. Our previous bands were already
making that sound in the late 1980's. Though as us musicians we laid dormant
for many long years after stopping making music. The writing never stopped. Now
the sound we grew loving and writing has emerged. Trapped in time but now
unleashed.
5. The
band has already shared stages with notable acts like Sacramentum, Sinister,
and Midnight. What have been some of the most memorable moments from those
performances, and how have they shaped the band's identity?
- Yes among
others. Playing festivals and actually being the first Death Metal band from
Los Angeles that I'm aware of to tour and play festivals in Japan. We're a
band with stage experience. We do what we do live and deliver our sound to the
crowds. The crowd responds positively.
6. With
members joining from bands like Infinitum Obscure and Temblad, how has each
member contributed to shaping Lurking Terror’s distinctive sound?
- Like
mentioned before. We brought our ideas together from music written from all
sides. The chemistry between us is great. We're not only musicians but friends
as well. There are no ideas that we don't share that help the creativity
that forms our sound.
7. Death
metal has evolved significantly over the decades. How do you see Lurking Terror
fitting into today’s scene, and what do you hope to contribute to the genre?
- Death
Metal has evolved in one way or another. Lurking Terror and our sound plays
homage to the early bands. We are not trying to incorporate a sound to fit in.
We are playing our style and showing our respects to the early days.
8. The
EP is being released through M-Theory Audio, a label known for supporting
underground metal. How has this partnership supported your vision for the band
and this release?
- M Theory
has been great. Communication from the very beginning has been straight
forward. We're doing the music and they are doing the background to help expose
the band to a larger audience. It's a 2 way street. Marco and the team he has
put together are great.
9. Fans
often describe your music as a “listening assault.” How do you approach
crafting songs that deliver such an intense and visceral experience?
- Yeah. I
can accept that description. We're brutally driving that music in your face as
a 'listening assault' then suddenly hitting you from all sides with all
heaviness!
10.
What’s next for Lurking Terror after the release of A World in Darkness?
Are there plans for a full-length album, more live performances, or other
projects fans can look forward to?
- Yeah
we've turned down many shows until after the release and until early 2025.
We have commited to some festivals already that we will be announcing soon. Our
follow up recording has already begun. Songs have been written. We look
forward to the following up with a full length album in 2025! ....DEATH METAL!
