Swedish death metal band Revolting returns with Night of the Horrid, a ninth album blending horror storytelling with old-school brutality and melody. Discover the grim tales behind their signature sound.
Thanx indeed! Well its a horror story about a scorned woman that refuses to be idle when her men have been cheating on her, instead she collects their heads. Its a nice little tale I think.
2. Night of the Horrid is your 9th full-length album. After so many releases, how do you keep your sound fresh while staying true to your death metal roots?
I don’t think we need to stay fresh really, rather rotten haha. Early on we found the sound that was to be Revolting, old school death metal in the Scandinavian vein with catchy choruses, like a sing along up-tempo death metal feast sort of. And we dont feel we wanna chnage that sound really, even if we ofcorpse do both faster and more midtempo stuff to vary the albums.
3. The album’s title track, Night of the Horrid, sounds like it could be a centerpiece. What can fans expect from this song, and does it carry any special significance within the album?
This song is a perfect way to describe Revolting indeed, its fast and melodic and ripping and dirty. And the chorus makes you wanna growl along too. Its just what we do in Revolting, a perfect example.
4. You've been a band since 2007, and Rogga Johansson has fronted the band
throughout its existence. How has your creative process evolved over the years,
particularly for this new album?
I dont think so no, its the same feeling now. With the dirty songs that still
are catchy and the lyrics that are basically short horror stories. This new
album just takes us onwards into the same rotting path really wich we walk.
5. Your new album cover artwork is striking. How does it tie into the themes
or stories you're telling on Night of the Horrid? Who was responsible for the
design?
The awesome artist Ivan Bragin made this piece, and when we got it we just felt
it was perfect. Its an oldschool zombie being axed in the head haha, what can
be more classic horror than that? And it just fits so great with what Revolting
is all about, death metal and horror.
6. You've worked with a number of labels over the years. How has your
partnership with Xtreem Music helped shape the direction of REVOLTING’s recent
releases, including Born to Be Dead and now Night of the Horrid?
Ive been friends for decades with Dave at the label, hes a killer guy and we
never have had any arguments. So it felt great with the previous album that we
could be on his label. and I think it fits perfectly too, he is all about real
death metal in all forms and Revolting fits right in there.
7. Looking at the tracklist for Night of the Horrid, titles like "Seven Severed Heads" and "Shapeshifter" stand out. Can you give us a glimpse into the lyrical themes of these songs?
The Seven Severed Heads is as mentioned about a woman scorned, and who takes a gruseome revenge on each man that cheated her. Shapeshifter is as classic horror as it can be really, its a werewolf story! Its about the metamorphosis of a person and the chnage that happens as he or she rips through the night in hunt for prey.
8. Your music is known for combining heaviness with melody. How do you strike a balance between the brutal and the melodic in your songwriting process?
Well its important that the melody never takes the main road so to speak haha, I dont like when it gets too melodic. On the other hand I personally hate too brutal music that is just brutal for its own sake, with no hooks or catchiness to it. I try to make the perfct combination of the two really. Often verses and brudges can be harder, and then the more epic parts can be done in the choruses. Its a simple way to work I guess but I like it.
9. The death metal scene has changed a lot since you first started in 2007. What’s your take on the current state of the genre, and where do you see REVOLTING fitting in today's landscape?
Well personally Ive been playing death metal since 1994 so things have certainly come and gone over the decades. But really I am the wrong person to ask, I really just try to make my own music and not be bothered with what other people do, I know what I like and I know what I wanna do, and try to do it the best I can. There will always be people liking a certain style of music, and a certain style of death metal. So I think each and every side to this genre will always have people that are into it really.
10. Night of the Horrid will be released on December 17th. How are you
preparing for the album’s release, and do you have any plans for live shows or
tours to support it?
We are preparing by stocking up on horror stuff and beers haha! And no shows
sadly, this band has always been more of an album releasing band where we make
the music we love, we never intended it to be a touring band at all.
11. With eight albums behind you, are there any particular albums or eras of
REVOLTING that you feel most proud of or that fans seem to resonate with the
most?
It seems that those who enjoy Revolting like songs from all albums really, wich
for us feels great. Personally I am the same too, there are songs on all albums
that are faves for me, so a best of album one day would be really fun to put
together haha.
12. Lastly, what message would you like to send to your fans as they gear up
for the release of Night of the Horrid? What do you hope they take away from
this album?
If you like it dirty and rotten but with a melodic catchy feeling, this new
album is right up your alley!
