Australian black metal force Christ Dismembered delves into tyranny, darkness, and unrelenting evil with their new album Ov Vampiricy. Discover their inspirations, narratives, and unapologetic approach to blackened chaos.
1. Ov
Vampiricy captures a chilling and unrelenting atmosphere. What inspired the
concept and themes of the album, and how do they tie into the band’s
overarching philosophy?
The
inspiration for the album mainly comes from the lies and deceptions within the
Catholic Church, preying on the innocent and vulnerable; worse more, children.
The album title itself is somewhat a play on words as it describes the vampires
of organised religion who skulk in the shadows, taking, draining and feeding on
the weak to survive. It's also conspired to be covered up through sheer
supremacy and swept under the rug through lies, deceptions and monumental
wealth - making it truly a tyrannical masked demon OV VAMPIRICY.
2. The
album title, Ov Vampiricy, conjures vivid imagery of ancient thirst
and vengeance. Can you delve deeper into the narrative you’re exploring through
the album?
The
narrative of the album takes a fairly firm hold on organised religion such as
tracks 'Child Devouring Servants Of Satan and 'See You In Hell', which delves
into the George Pell scandal, of which the man truly was a wolf in sheep's
clothing who preyed on the vulnerable, especially childre. While I believe it
was never 100% proved that he did committ those atrocities, we all know he did.
So the narrative delves into Pell and the church as maggots of true evil in
disguise, portraying the very thing they swear to protect against. Pure EVIL.
3. Each
track on Ov Vampiricy feels meticulously crafted, with songs
like ‘Fool’s Gambit’ and ‘The Numbers Oppose’ standing out. Can you describe
your creative process when writing and composing this album?
The songs
mentioned capture personal struggles, both physically and mentally. They are
all with strong intent and ill will towards our own personal demons and the
physical ones that wear the cloth.
4. ‘Riddled
With Sin’ serves as a climactic end to the album. How did you approach this
track differently to ensure it leaves such a lasting impression?
When I
wrote 'Riddled With Sin' I had a vision of a battle, a struggle and ultimately
a stalemate between good and evil. The cinematic end musically describes the
aftermath of the battle, the wasteland that is left in its wake and the church
bells are all that remains of the righteous. However, that is not the end, nor
will the battle ever end.
5. You’ve
shared the stage with some legendary names in black and extreme metal. How have
these experiences influenced your music or approach to live performances?
What we do
ON stage is 100% our own. That being said we have toured with bands such as
Belphegor, Dark Funeral, Immolation and many more of that calibre. Myself being
a huge fan of those bands growing up, going through good times and bad times,
the music of these long serving veterans has helped shape me as a musician and
I have definitely used their influences to shape my music. Also, the drive,
determination, passion and professionalism of those bands truly continues to
inspire me to never give up on those big dreams, even though they may seem out
of reach at times.
6. Christ
Dismembered has a reputation for unapologetic black metal. How do you balance
staying true to the genre’s roots while ensuring your sound evolves and remains
distinct?
There
really is no thought process to the writing process of Christ Dismembered. It
comes very naturally. As for myself I have very deep roots in harsh death metal
and black metal so when combined together I naturally lean towards that...also
the other guys have deep roots in the genre as all of them come from
accomplished backgrounds of black metal, death metal and brutal slam.
7. The
imagery and themes in Ov Vampiricy are both dark and
cinematic. How important is visual storytelling to Christ Dismembered, and do
you have plans for music videos or other visual representations?
The visuals
and theatrical appearance of Christ Dismembered and black metal as a whole is
of paramount importance in creating and painting the vision as we see it. We
have in the past created a film clip to our song 'Spit Forth Your Lies' and
definitely have plans for more.
8. With
a lineup featuring Arch Worm, Doomsayer, Winter Demon, Plague, and Skorpa, how
do your individual roles and influences shape the band’s sound?
As said
previously in question 6 we all have roots in this style of aggressive culture
and that is apparent in our musical journey.
9. Australia
has a growing reputation for producing extreme metal acts. What’s your take on
the Australian black metal scene, and how has it shaped Christ Dismembered’s
journey?
Australia
has always had countless amazing bands ranging from all genres of the extreme,
so there is nothing new there. Although extreme black metal, to my knowledge,
has not got an overly large presence in Australia, so it's an honour to carry
the torch and if we manage to inspire people and bands on our shores then we
salute you.
10. As
you prepare to unleash Ov Vampiricy upon the world, what do
you hope fans take away from the album, and what can they expect from your live
shows in support of its release?
With the
imminent release of this album we hope fans will not only enjoy what we have to
offer but also admire our persistence and dedication to the black arts and
staying true to what we believe in, in an ever-changing and influential world.
Love it, hate it, the choice is yours at the end of the day, but we're going to
be bringing the Devil's fury for all to see. We are Christ Dismembered. See you
there. See you in Hell!
