DEKAY's "Start The Rot" is a haunting exploration of societal decay, personal battles, and humanity’s precarious future. We delve into the album’s themes, inspirations, and the journey behind this ambitious solo project.
1. "Start
The Rot" tackles themes of existential crises and societal decay. What
inspired you to explore such weighty topics, and how did you channel that into
your music?
These have
always been topics at the forefront of my mind, 911 was a big wake up call for
me and opened my eyes to the reality of the world around me and sent me on a
journey to learn what “they” don’t want us to know .
2. The
opening instrumental track, "Dannsa Na Cuileag," sets a haunting
tone. Can you tell us more about its creation and how it ties into the album's
overarching concept?
Dannsa Na
Cuileag ,gelic for “dance of the flies”. This instrumental serves as an intro
and sets the tone of the vibe for the album getting listeners ready for the
horror that’s about to unfold.
3. "Social
Degradation" is a scathing critique of the political climate in America.
What message do you hope listeners take away from this track, and how do you
see music's role in social commentary?
This track
was one of the last written and was written the night of the first attempt on
president Trumps life in Pennsylvania , hence the “fight fight fight” , I asked
myself how have we devolved so far that this is ok? weather you like him or
hate him it was inspiring to see him stand up and yell in the face of
adversity. 40 + years of a globalist agenda being spoon fed to us is putting us
on a fast track to “idiocracy” , this track serves as the first warning.
4. Anxiety
is a deeply personal struggle, and "Fear (Within)" gives voice to
that battle. How did writing and performing this track serve as a catharsis for
you?
This was
the first track I wrote…ever . Anxiety is something i have dealt with since a
child and being a bassist for the last 20+ years stepping into a “spotlight”
role was highly anxiety inducing so the lyrics for this came naturally as such
. It was a battle to even begin the writing process but it was through this
track I was able to break through the barriers in my head and write a whole
album.
5. Your
cover of Nine Inch Nails' "Heresy" features Hyde Von Hitchcock. How
did this collaboration come about, and what does this song mean to you in the
context of the album?
Nine Inch
Nails has been one of my biggest influences since the mid nineties, the
downward spiral was one of those quintessential albums for me and I always felt
the track “Heresy” was overlooked. Trent was a big inspiration in creating this
album as I thought to my self “if Trent can write an entire album on his own ,
why can’t I ? “ Hyde is a dear friend and we have talked about working together
a few times and I thought this would be a fun track to team up on with our
contrasting vocals. This is also my attempt at paying respects to one of the
artists that has influenced me the most !
6. The
title track, "Start The Rot," draws from "The NeverEnding
Story" for inspiration. How did you translate the abstract concept of
"the rot" into music and visuals for the video?
The
NeverEnding Story was one of my favorite movies as a kid and still is , the
concept of “The Nothing” captivated me . The “Rot” much like “The
Nothing” consumes everything in its path and originates from our own
actions and serves as the second warning .
7. "The
Folly Of Man" paints a grim picture of humanity's potential future. Do you
believe there's still hope for change, or is this track more of a warning shot
to listeners?
This track
is the final warning and a direct response to social degradation if we as a
species don’t correct our path NOW before it’s too late, or have we already
waited too long?
8. "MINDFUCK"
delves into personal betrayal and disillusionment. What was the creative
process behind this raw and emotional track, and why was it important for you
to include it on the album?
The roots
of this song though written broadly so anyone can relate was inspired by the
very thing that angered me enough to push through my own roadblock’s of anxiety
and move forward with my own project stepping out of my comfort zone and into
something iv never done before. The true source of that inspiration will remain
a secret.
9. The
album closes with "Paradise," which offers a grim yet poetic vision
of life thriving in decay. How do you see this track as a culmination of the
themes explored throughout the record?
Paradise is
the end result of our own actions if we don’t correct the path. A future where
man falls to our own self made extinction brought on by our own lust for power
and control. But hey ,it’s not all bad … the insects and worms will
thrive!
10. As a
solo project, DEKAY is a deeply personal endeavor. How do you balance the
creative and technical aspects of being a one-person band, and what challenges
or freedoms does that bring?
Well, it
was a learning curve for sure, I had no idea what I was doing or where to
begin. I just started and let things progress naturally and almost
subconsciously, started building something that sounds almost musical. Got some
tips and pointers from some friends in the production side of the industry and
learned as I went. I now have a guitarist and bassist and currently seeking a
drummer to make this project a proper band and take this to the stage !
