SHINING's latest release, Feberdrömmar (Del Ett), reimagines their iconic material with fresh collaborations, dark themes, and experimental touches, promising a unique sonic journey for extreme metal fans.
1. "Feberdrömmar
(Del Ett)" marks a unique evolution for SHINING. What inspired the
decision to rework and expand on the original material from “8 1/2”?
Well, instead of
just having TSI re-issuing the 8 ½ compilation I wanted to do something more
than simply releasing it as it was originally released back in 2012. I had also
been experimenting over the years with a
few other demo tracks and vocalists, so that sort of made me thinking about
expanding the idea.
2. You’ve collaborated with a stellar lineup of artists like Maniac, Attila
Csihar, and Gaahl on this release. How did these collaborations come about, and
what did each artist bring to the project?
All of these artists are friends of mine, and I have known all them for
years, so it came quite naturally when choosing who would be doing what. Every
artist have brought something exceptional on these recordings and so have the
new ones scheduled for Part II as well,
3. The title “Feberdrömmar” translates to “Fever Dreams.” Can you elaborate on
the significance of this title and the nightmarish themes explored throughout
the album?
I would day that the title pretty much sums up what these releases are all
about.
4. Listeners have always associated SHINING with dark and unsettling
atmospheres. How does _"Feberdrömmar (Del Ett)"_ push the boundaries
of your sound and vision compared to your earlier work?
It’s a whole different experience altogether, as I myself am not doing ay
the vocals, and the vocalists whom I have chosen on these two albums are all
familiar with my style and I guess that somehow made the whole project interesting,
having these great artists put their own touches to my work.
5. The album will be available in various formats, including limited edition vinyl and cassettes. What role does physical media play for SHINING in the age of digital streaming, and why did you choose these specific formats?
SHINING have always hade a rather loyal fanbase and they have come to expect our releases to be available on these formats over the years, so, who are we to say no? Physical media, for both me personally as well as our fans, is of high importance and I am extremely glad it is, especially in this day and age.
6. Your music has always been highly emotional and raw. Was there a particular mindset or atmosphere you tried to evoke while reworking the old material and creating the new tracks?
Its not necessary for me to try putting myself in any specific mindset really, as that comes naturally, actually always has.
7. The inclusion of an exclusive A3 poster for collectors adds a visual element to the release. How important is the visual aspect of SHINING, and what message or feeling do you want fans to take from the artwork?
Again, all these aspects are of high importance. The visual side of things no less than the audial torment.
8. With “Feberdrömmar (Del Ett)” as the first chapter of a two-part release, what can fans expect from the second chapter? Are there any hints about how _Chapter Two_ will expand on the themes and sounds of the first?
I am hoping that we are done and able to have the second part released around August/September next year. The second chapter will include 5 more tracks with 5 different vocalists as well as an outro by Tuomas Tahvanainen, who also contributed to the first part with the intro.
9. SHINING is known for pushing listeners into uncomfortable and confronting spaces. What emotions or experiences do you hope to provoke with _"Feberdrömmar (Del Ett)"_?
Same as always…
10. You’ve mentioned that the second chapter is scheduled for release in Summer 2025. How does the timeline between the two chapters help shape the overall experience of this two-part odyssey?
We would have released both parts now already, but I felt I had to rework some of the new stuff a little before doing that, so there you go, that’s the only reason for the two of them being released on two different dates.
11. What was the biggest challenge in balancing the old material with the new on _"Feberdrömmar (Del Ett)"_? Did you ever feel torn between staying faithful to the original sound and pushing it in a new direction?
No.
12. SHINING has left a significant mark on the extreme metal scene over the years. How do you view the band’s legacy, and what do you hope "Feberdrömmar (Del Ett)"_ will contribute to your ongoing influence on the genre?
I have no idea, but I hope that this project is something that our fans will “enjoy”.
