Italian thrash/crossover band Spoiled unleashes their full-length album Collapse, blending raw energy with hardcore fury. We discuss their journey, influences, and the intense themes behind their relentless sound.
1. Can
you tell us about the journey from Spoiled’s formation in 2016 to the release
of Collapse?
Spoiled was
born in 2016 in Bologna from an idea of Zibbo and the first female singer, by
the time they moved to Rome where they got together with Yari on bass and
Pekkio on guitar. By the time the first singer quitted, she was replaced for
another crawling girl that was forced to leave the band for personal matters.
Looking for
a new singer, Spoiled looked out for a substitute and Danny Boy (who has been
in The Fourth Sin with Pekkia for several years) joined the band and here we
are...
2. What inspired you to create this
full-length album?
We had some
old stuff that we started working on with Laura but the rest of the songs were
written together with Danny.
3. Your
music draws heavily from thrash and crossover icons like Slayer and Municipal
Waste. How do
you balance paying homage to these influences while keeping Spoiled’s sound
unique?
Slayer and
Waste are two of the most influencing band for us: we love them, we listen to
them and we are strongly influenced by these bands but we always try to put all
our influences into the songs... most important, the furious hardcore from the
early years.
4. Collapse was recorded at 16th
Cellar Studio, a place known for producing some legendary acts. What was
the recording experience like, and how did it shape the album’s sound?
It was a
pleasure to record this record with Saul, we had some sessions in which we were
alone and others with all the four members, we made a lot of experiments so we
could figure out which kind of sound was more suitable to better demonstrate
pure violence!
5. Your
previous releases were DIY efforts. How does working with Gruesome Records and
Selvajaria Records
compare to those earlier self-produced projects?
They are
very professional, it’s a whole different level!
6. The
album features 15 blistering tracks. How did you approach songwriting for such
a high-energy and
relentless collection of songs?
The songs
are about the world we live in...there are so many contradictions, too much
violence and we are trying to give back a part of that violence against the
rulers of this fucking zoo we’re living in...
7. The
track "Zombie Hunters" has been described as a short, aggressive
burst of punk-inspired thrash. Can you share more about the story or theme behind this
song?
The zombies
are used as a metaphor for the drug/alcohol addicts that turn themselves into
walking dead.
Sometimes
it seems that we’re all living in a coke-ridden society and we don’t like
it...everyone is free to do what he/she wants with their bodies but I’m also
free to hate them!
8. Thrash
and crossover are often tied to energetic live performances. How does Spoiled
translate the
intensity of Collapse to your shows?
Spoiled
shows are fast, furious and uncompromising: try to be there on time or you’re
gonna miss half of the experience.
9. Any plans for upcoming tours?
We’re
planning a mass-destructive tour for the late 2025, if you want to see us
playing in your town get in touch!
10. Can you tell us about the
line-up changes and the reformation in 2021? How has the new line-up influenced
Spoiled’s sound?
The most
relevant difference is due to the genre of the singer: when you have a girl
screaming is a bit different from a growling man.
11. What inspired the album’s title,
Collapse? Is there a central theme or message that ties the tracks together?
In the
beginning there wasn’t a fil rouge for the songs but the lyrics are all about
some aspects of our life, our world and our scene too. They’re all about
situations about to collapse. This is not a dystopic tale...some of the sci-fi
nightmares are happening as we speak. This shit is fucking real!
12. Your
music seems to channel the raw, fast-paced energy of the golden era of thrash.
What do you think
keeps this style relevant and exciting in today’s metal scene?
Those
things happened in the 80's and they will never come back but the traditions
don't die. Nowadays, it seems that everybody's trying to contaminate the sound
without looking at the past and to those who made metal history so precious:
the bands!
13. The Italian metal scene has a
rich history. How do you see Spoiled fitting into or standing out in this
context?
We’re in
the middle between the metal and the hardcore scene...that’s the music we love,
that’s the way we like to play it.
14. For fans eager to dive into
Collapse, what do you hope they take away from listening to the album?
We’re
walking on the edge of a catastrophe but it’s not too late...learn who’s your
real enemy, prepare to be ready to fight, love the ones who love you, don’t
even try to change the world ‘cause it’s impossible...try to change yourself.
15. Any
particular track you’re most excited for them to hear?
My
favourites are: “Zombie Hunters”, “Rotting Sun”, “Collapse” and “Be Food!” I
hope they can offer a different point of view on some matters together with a
blasting pope-killing rhythm!
