After 12 years, Italian slam death veterans Vulvectomy return with Aberrant Vaginal Gestation, an uncompromising slab of brutality. We spoke with Diego about the band's resurrection, songwriting, and their grotesque sonic assault.
1. After
12 years, Vulvectomy has returned with Aberrant Vaginal Gestation. What
inspired you to resurrect the band and unleash this new slab of brutality?
Hello
everyone, this is Diego and thank you for this interview. Honestly the band
never ceased to exist, we just took a long break due to personal needs. We
always had the passion and the will to continue and this album is a further
step in our personal evolution.
2. The
album is described as a relentless onslaught of slam death, void of humanity or
mercy. How did you approach the songwriting process to ensure it remained as
uncompromisingly heavy as possible?
As with the
other albums, Mario is the main songwriter, afterwards we help him with the
arrangements or if any of us want to add and suggest our own ideas. Each of our
albums has always been different from the previous one, while maintaining a
fairly slamming base. Since 2007, things have changed a bit, and so have we...
we honestly wanted to stand out from the crowd.
3. Your
song titles and themes are as grotesque and unsettling as ever. What fuels the
lyrical concepts behind Vulvectomy, and do you see them as a form of extreme
horror storytelling?
We have
always liked to shock and at the same time make our fans smile, so we always
try to remain grotesque
4. The
first single, ‘Scrotal Abscess Drainage,’ is an utterly brutal assault. Why did
you choose this track
as the first taste of the album, and what makes it stand out to you?
Thank you
for your kind words. We chose this track because we thought it was the right
mix to best represent the whole album. Of course, each listener can choose his
or her own favourite pieces. Some a bit more slamming others a bit less.
5. The
album was mixed by Alessio Cattaneo and mastered by Stefano Morabito, both of
whom have worked
with some legendary death metal acts. What did they bring to the sound of
Aberrant Vaginal Gestation?
Both
studios are located in Rome so it was more smooth for Mario to work with them
living in the same city.
He knew well the guys personally and professionally so when we had started to
make more concrete plans about the official recording, immediately he proposed
those two producers. We worked very well with both of them, we tried to take
care of all aspects during the mixing and mastering phase. Certainly their
ability and competence gave our new album a much more powerful and modern sound
than our previous albums, although it sounded very natural in some ways, we
absolutely didn't want a fake and plastic sound as unfortunately often happens
today for many album releases in our genre. We are all very satisfied with the
final result.
6. Guang
Yang’s artwork for the album is a truly grotesque and nightmarish vision. How
involved was the band in the creative process for the cover, and what did you
want it to represent?
Guang Yang is absolutely an outstanding artist with a fantastic talent. we were in constant contact with him to point out any changes or additions. We wanted a cover full of detailS, where you could always appreciate something new by looking at it. Guang Yang perfectly realised our nightmare idea. That is, the gestation and birth of wickedness, through a vagina from which unclean creatures, worms, etc. etc.
7. Slam
and brutal death metal have evolved over the years with new bands emerging.
What are your thoughts on the modern scene, and where do you see Vulvectomy’s
place in it?
Every year
many new bands come out with young and talented musicians, some interesting and
others a little less so. I honestly wouldn't know what to tell you about that,
Vulvectomy always try to do what we like and play around as much as possible to
meet old and new friends. Of course we are very pleased to know that our band
has its own followers.
8. The
album promises to “scar you and vomit over the last grains of hope you may have
had for mankind.” Do you see Vulvectomy’s music as purely an extreme sonic
experience, or is there a deeper reflection of human depravity behind it?
I would say
that personally, but I think also for the other members, Vulvectomy's music
represents our passion for extreme music, and also our personal view on human
depravity, always with a hint of black humour.
9. With
the album dropping via Comatose Music on April 11th, can fans expect any live
performances or tours to support its release?
Certainly
with the release of the new album we will be around as much as possible this
year. We already have several shows lined up and will be announcing more soon.
Check our official pages to find out where and when you can find us.
10. For
those who have followed Vulvectomy since the beginning and for new listeners
just discovering the band—what final words do you have for them before Aberrant
Vaginal Gestation drops?
I can only
give a huge thank you to all the people who have followed us since the
beginning. We never expected to receive so much support and acclaim. And also
to the new followers. Thank you for your time, support and conversations. I
hope to meet you all when we play and have a beer together. Let's hope the new
album will repay them for the long wait
