Antsud Metal Project’s latest single, Külm, is a hauntingly emotional gothic metal track exploring love, loss, and emotional decay. We spoke with the band about its inspiration, composition, and upcoming music.
1. Külm
is a deeply emotional and haunting track. What inspired you to write about the
gradual decay of a relationship?
It comes from personal experience. The song reflects that moment of doubt—when
a fight makes you question everything, yet you still hold on. Sometimes, you
hold on for too long.
2. The song's atmosphere is cold and brooding, much like the theme it
explores. How did you translate this emotional frost into the music itself?
It all started with three simple notes on the Estonian folk instrument, kannel.
I love working with minimalism—letting the empty spaces between notes carry as
much weight as the notes themselves. That silence, that tension, speaks
volumes.
3. Gothic metal is known for its dramatic and melancholic sound. What
influences—musical or literary—shaped the composition and lyrics of Külm?
My biggest influences are Arvo Pärt and Estonian folk music—both have this raw
emotional depth that shaped how I approach music. These are the sounds I grew
up with, and they continue to inspire me today.
4. The chorus of Külm carries a lot of weight emotionally. Can you tell us about the songwriting process and how you crafted its impact?
The phrase "Hella-hella" means my love, my darling. Even when a couple fights, love can still linger. But when the fighting stops, it often means someone has given up—and that’s when the real cold sets in. Songwriting, for me, is a way to process emotions safely and make sense of them.
5. The imagery in Külm mirrors the bleakness of winter. How important is
nature as a metaphor in your songwriting?
Nature is everything. Most of my lyrics and melodies come to me when I’m out
walking. It always finds its way into the music, often without me even
realizing it.
6. Did you draw from personal experiences or stories when creating Külm, or
was it more of a conceptual exploration?
It’s deeply personal, as mentioned before.
7. How does Külm fit into the broader vision of Antsud Metal Project? Does
it represent a recurring theme in your music?
Yes, themes of love, loss, human relationships, and resilience run through
our music. We also address abuse, consent, and women’s rights—these are topics
that deserve to be voiced.
8. Gothic metal often thrives on visual storytelling. Do you have any plans
for a music video for Külm? If so, what kind of aesthetic or narrative would
you aim for?
Yes! We’ll be releasing a music video for Külm very soon. Expect raw emotions,
nature, cold, and movement—a visual extension of the song’s atmosphere.
9. How did you approach the recording process for Külm? Were there any
specific techniques or instruments that helped create its chilling atmosphere?
The vocal melody came first—it had this naturally chilling quality, and
everything else followed from there. The orchestration took its own path,
shaping the mood organically. In the first verse, there’s a pad sound that
really reflects emptiness, while the beat feels almost like stalagmites echoing
inside a cold cave. Music should always create an image—at least in the
composer’s mind.
10. What kind of response have you received from listeners? Have fans shared any personal connections to the song’s themes?
The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Many people have told us they deeply relate to the song’s themes. That’s the most rewarding part—when music connects on a personal level.
11. If Külm were part of a larger story or concept album, what would its
place be in the narrative?
Külm would be a turning point in a relationship crisis—the moment where
everything is uncertain. Hopefully, the story would have a happy ending.
12. What’s next for Antsud Metal Project? Can we expect more music exploring
similar themes, or will you be venturing into different emotional landscapes?
Our next song will be powerful and continue in a similar vein. We’re excited to
share more and more—our debut album Sulam drops on 09.05! Stay tuned and
follow our social media for updates!
