The Total Sound Of The Undergound

Lelahel Metal

Mortez embraces a heavier, high-energy sound with Down With the Devil, blending symphonic rock and gritty metal. We discuss their influences, resilience, and what’s next for this dynamic duo.

1. "Down With the Devil" marks a shift in your sound. What inspired you to take this heavier, high-energy direction?

When looking ahead to the future of our live performances, we want to give the audience the full spectrum of emotions. From The deep epic ballads depicting life’s pain and sorrows to the rock anthems spreading joy and power.

2. The song was born at an airport—can you share more about how that moment of inspiration came to life?

Rachele had just had an entire album of her work stolen from her. and instead of letting it destroy her she used it to fuel the lyrics. When we just so happened to be flying out of town.

3. Mortez blends symphonic rock with gritty metal energy. How do you balance those contrasting elements in your songwriting?

Since brett spent so many years being a session player and a composer it just felt natural to combine the two with rachele’s incredible singing and knack for songwriting.

4. Rachele, you have a strong pop background, and Brett, you have deep roots in the metal scene. How do your different musical histories shape Mortez's sound?

As a dancer rachele is always envisioning the stage production and the visuals and how the music can bring that more to life. Brett as a composer has always just spat out ideas left and right. when our artistic brains unite and mesh on an idea a song is usually born.

5. The Pretty Reckless was a major influence on this track. What elements of their style resonated with you the most?

As a female singer i am inspired by taylor momsen’s powerful gritty vocals. Her aesthetic and passion in her performances have always given me life.

6. The lyrics of "Down With the Devil" speak about resilience and redemption. Do they reflect personal experiences you've faced in the music industry?

Absolutely! We both have far too many stories to tell in just one interview.

7. Your previous singles had a more symphonic and melodic vibe. Do you see yourselves exploring this heavier rock direction more in the future?

Yes, we do. As we curate an hour long show we absolutely want to bring that full spectrum of emotions. We also want to be authentic to what’s driving us in the moment.

8. You recorded this track at your home studio in LA. What was the recording process like, and how did that creative freedom impact the final sound?

Shout out to all the singers that have anxiety. I struggle with maintaining confidence in myself and as an artist. This song was less stressful because i was able to play and have fun with the vocals.
9. You've mentioned wanting to tour with a full orchestra. How would you envision bringing that idea to life for a live audience?

I’d say something similar to what they do for bands at the royal Albert hall. Or how hans zimmer does his live shows. Most of the songs already have orchestral elements, So it just comes down to arrangement.

10. You’ve had a residency at Noho House, which has hosted some big names. How has performing in that space shaped your live energy?

It was an honor to have our first handful of shows in such a notable location. It was a very small intimate setting which allowed us to give people a visceral experience emotionally.

11. What’s next for Mortez? Any plans for a full album, collaborations, or upcoming performances fans should know about?

We have a new music video coming out 03/26. We are also finishing up our very first 5 song EP. as far as shows, the dates will be posted on our socials.

12. If listeners could take away one message or feeling from "Down With the Devil," what would you want it to be?

“Refuse to be defeated by the harshness of the world, never give up”
