EP Review: Dark Solstice – Where Black Stars Beckon
Dark
Solstice’s debut EP Where Black Stars Beckon offers a promising first
glimpse into the Munich-based band’s dark and melodic universe. The opener, Pathways,
begins with a clean guitar and bass intro—classic metal vibes—before diving
into heavy melodic riffs and catchy, slow-paced drums. The addition of
atmospheric keys and clean vocals in the chorus evokes mid-era Dark
Tranquillity, while a punchy guitar break adds contrast. The song ends on a
high with a rich, melodic solo and ambient outro.
The second
track, Open, hits harder from the start, its crushing intro threatening
to tear speakers apart. Groovy drums and aggressive riffs lead into a less
melodic chorus, followed by a speed-driven bridge and a surprising blast beat
section that injects black metal flavor and intensity before returning to a
pounding conclusion.
The title
track, Where Black Stars Beckon, is the most aggressive of the trio. It
opens with rhythmic guitars and a haunting ambiance reminiscent of late-era In
Flames, then unleashes a storm of blast beats and fast riffs. Atmospheric keys
and clean vocals balance the chaos, building toward a melodic solo.
Overall,
it’s a solid, if predictable, debut. Dark Solstice shows real potential—now
they just need to take a few more risks.
