San Demas has been making waves with their latest single, You & I, a high-energy, emotionally driven track. We caught up with the band to discuss its impact, creative process, and future plans.
1. You
& I has been out for a little while now. How has the response been from
your fans and new listeners?
The response has been really positive from new and old fans. It's been special to connect with people through this song and share it together.
2. This track is said to be your standout single. What makes You & I so
special compared to your previous releases?
This song is special because we feel it has our best chorus and upbeat energy. Our set has an array of style and tempo and this one is a feel good banger. It's our most mature and well crafted song.
3. The song was inspired by a musical bond between father and son. Can you
tell us more about that story and how it shaped the final track?
The verse riff was something the guitarist's Dad played to him as a child, and was his signature riff. It was a pleasure to use that in the song for the verse, and honour that inspiration in 'You & I'.
4. You’ve cited influences like 30 Seconds to Mars, The Police, and
Beartooth. How did these different styles come together in You & I?
I describe this song as a heavier version of 'A sky full of stars' by Coldplay. It's dancy and high energy but has a dynamic journey. I feel like it sounds like 'From Yesterday' by 30 seconds to mars in the verse, and the aggressive octave riff in the middle 8 reminds me of Beartooth.
5. The middle 8 section of the song has been highlighted as a real standout
moment. What was the creative process behind that section?
We are always trying to link parts to creative a narrative to the song. The middle 8 takes a rhythm from the chorus, and drives it with a heavier staccato, and then plays off that in various ways with single notes to ascending patterns. I think it hits another level of energy in that song before bringing it back to a close.
6. Justin Hill produced and mastered You & I. How was it working with
him, and what did he bring to the track?
Justin is a master at what he does. We love working with him and everything he brings to the table from his incredible production to his creative process. He is so invested and easy to work with, and this song would not be possible without him.
7. This is the first song Neil Marron has written for San Demas as a
lyricist. How did his approach to songwriting influence the band’s sound?
Neil (Maz) is a great songwriter in his own right, and inspiration struck with this song and he absolutely nailed the vocals for this. He has great artistry and eloquence to his writing and it was exciting to collaborate in this way.
8. With this release, do you feel San Demas has evolved musically? If so, in
what ways?
I feel we have evolved as this comes as our 2nd release, and we all have matured and found our sound. Lucy is in her zone and delivers such a strong diverse vocal performance and her qualities really shine through.
9. You’re set to play at 2000 Trees this summer alongside some incredible
bands. How does it feel to be on that lineup, and what can fans expect from
your performance?
We are so humbled and excited to play 2000 trees. It's our biggest gig for sure. We have started preparing already and you will get the very best from us. Can't wait!
10. Since forming in 2021, how has the journey been for San Demas? What have
been some of the biggest challenges and highlights so far?
Our lineup has changed a bit and trying to sustain momentum with the costs of self-publishing and touring being so high. I hope we can build on what we have and maintain the progress we have worked hard to achieve.
11. If you could describe You & I in just three words, what would they
be?
catchy, diverse, upbeat.
12. What’s next for San Demas? Do you have more new music in the works, or
any exciting plans for the rest of 2025?
We release
the EP July 4th before Trees, and then hopefully have a new batch of songs
already recorded for the end of the year. We would love to go on tour and play
more shows.
